The Carpetbagger’s Weekly Case Studies

Miranda Kerr in Willow Skirt and Prada pumps

First and foremost, this top deserves its very own round of applause.  It’s rectangular silhouette, three quarter sleeves, and strategically placed front pockets make this blouse anything but “basic white button down.”  The way it drapes on Miranda’s body is divine.  Granted, it’s worn by  a tall and thin supermodel, this blouse’s boxy shape is responsible for taking her whole outfit to another level. The Willow mini skirt and Prada pumps are clean and classic, pieces that if you have the body for it, you can’t go wrong.  Here’s a girl who knows what she’s got and knows how to flaunt it with style and grace.

Berenice Bejo

I’m sorry, but was this event that Berenice Bejo attended held at Medieval Times?  Otherwise, there is simply no excuse for this mess.  I guess if you look only at the top 5 or so inches of the dress, it’s sorta cute, but the rest is a disaster and I doubt I could find ANYONE who begs to differ.

Jessica Alba in Sportmax

Jessica Alba in Sportmax

Jessica Alba rocks this outfit!  It’s a perfectly laid back look for an afternoon in the East Village.  As always, blue and green go together famously and her ‘go with anything’ black booties are a great way to top it off.  She manages to look chic without trying too hard and shows how to do bright colors in the dead of winter.

Taylor Momsen in Marchesa

Taylor Momsen in Marchesa

Umm, okay.. so I had to take not a double, but triple look at this to believe what I was looking at.  Could it be?  The heinously, usually whorish/ghoulish dressed Taylor Momsen looking absolutely stunning in a lovely black laced Marchesa dress?!  By Golly, it is.  I’m sure it’s just a fluke, but damn does she look exquisite!  Here’s how you do gothic inspired in a tasteful, elegant way instead of making yourself look like you should be swinging from a stripper pole.  It fits her to a T and is plenty sexy, while still leaving plenty to the imagination.  The basic beige kitten heels are definitely the right way to go for this look, and I even like her heavy eye makeup, just no more please.  The girl looks good and based on the sly, hidden smile, I think she knows it.  Here’s hoping this major upgrade is here to stay!

Dakota Fanning in Rodarte

Nice job Dakota, I commend you for not shying away from the edgier/high fashion looks.  Dakota and her little sister Elle seem to have a solid friendship with the Mulleavy sisters and give their line  (Rodarte) some well deserved PR by sporting their masterpieces.  I’m in favor of this ensemble, (especially the silver peep toes!) and Dakota oozes poise and sophistication, not an easy task for a teen decked in the  whimsy that is Rodarte.  I wonder if the peplum blouse could be a bit more tailored to Dakota’s shape, but it doesn’t bother me.  Her blue eyes and golden hair enhance the beauty of her overall look here and her aloof pout is just perfect.

Victoria, Victoria Beckham raincloud-emblazened sheath

Michelle Williams in Victoria, Victoria Beckham raincloud-emblazened sheath

So I officially want to be best friends with Michelle Williams.  Not only to borrow her amazingly sweet wardrobe, but just to be in the presence of someone who seems so kind and charming in a very gentle manner.  Now about this dress-I don’t know if I could dream up anything cuter and more charmingly nostalgic.  I mean seriously, way to take a basic silhouette and make it completely one of a kind!  Always a fan of collared necks, I love how this little number distributes a perfect ratio of creamy white,  a good-humored print, and  touch of sparkle.  I agree with her choice of simple black heels and no jewelry, letting the dress do all the talking.  Williams wears this beauty with ease and contagious smile, the perfect accessory!

Sarah Michelle Gellar in Haute Hippie mini and cropped black blazer

Oh Sarah Michelle, nice try honey.  But this look just isn’t working for me.  The basic idea behind it is fine- a sparkling black and gold mini with a black blazer, though the particular separates she chose don’t mesh well, not to mention rather ill-fitting.  I know for a fact that this girl has a knockout body, but this outfit adds 15, 20 pounds easily.  She could do so much better, much sexier, and much more flattering and I’m hoping that for her next public appearance she will.  This  outfit would be best suited on a 13 year old girl making her debut at her Bat Mitzvah.

10 Crosby by Derek Lam

Diane Kruger in 10 Crosby by Derek Lam

Diane Kruger is one of my favorites, because not only does she behold the beauty of a poised goddess, she takes fashion risks and does so brilliantly.  Here in this 10 Crosby by Derek Lam look, she does a fine job of making this look her own.  I happen to be a big fan of stripes and florals together and this is exception.  However, I’m not so keen on the dress poking out under the skirt?  It keeps your eye moving back and forth and not in a good evened out sort of way, more in a confused “wait, what?” sort of way.  But that could just be me, and I still give her props for not playing it too safe.  Last, but not least I dig the sandals; I always agree with a palette of green, black, and yellow.

Sarah Jessica Parker in Oscar de la Renta dress and Leather Jacket

Sarah Jessica Parker in Oscar de la Renta dress and Leather Jacket

Oh Sarah Jessica, what do I say… Good try?  All this looks like is a way too long nightgown made from an 80’s prom dress fabric, then she goes all Michael Jackson on us with the jacket and those gloves!?  Nothing about this is okay.  Better luck next time.

Krysten Ritter in Peter Som

I would like to apologize to Peter Som on behalf of Krysten Ritter.  Mr. Som, you are a lovely designer, it’s really too bad this usually cute actress does a sham of a job representing you at your Fall 2012 show!  I mean, what is there to this dress besides managing to looking like a potato sack?  And don’t even get me started on the  mismatched purple accessories!

Rooney Mara in Louis Vuitton

Rooney Mara knows how to impress in this impeccably tailored Louis Vuitton beauty.  The emerald green is the perfect, yet subtle quality of this dress to take it from basic to arousing and elegant.  The shoes are alright, I guess.  I don’t hate them, but I think I’d prefer to see this dress paired with some classic kitten heels in the same gorgeous emerald shade to enhance the charmingly humble vibe of the dress.

Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian

Now, I am usually so NOT a fan of this girl’s style, but every now and then she’s bound to make some descent choices.  This look is super duper cute and I would love to rock it myself.

Emma Roberts

Emma Roberts in Kate Spade Oxfords

Emma is a girl who I’m still on the fence about.  I’ve seen her do well just as many times as she’s looked completely lost in some getups.  But here, looking like a woman with things to do, places to be, she does these clothes some good.

Rachel Mccadams

Rachel Mccadams in Andrew Gn

Simple and stunning.

Drew Barrymore in J. Crew Dress

Drew Barrymore in J. Crew Dress

This is how you take a simple smock sillhouette and gracefully jazz it up with a boldly beautiful print and some kick-ass Brian Atwood purple Suede pumps.   Well done Drew Barrymore!

Zoe Saldana in Alexander McQeen

Zoe Saldana in Alexander McQeen

Always a fan of McQeen’s attention to detail that makes each and everyone of his designs his own.  Not to mention, it fits the girl to a T!

Katherine Heigl

Katherine Heigl

Close but no cigar, Katherine Heigl.  Don’t get me wrong, I am all for this relatively clownish inspired ensemble, but paired with her perfectly coiffed hair and to quote what a friend so kindly calls “church hands,” this look is sending me mixed messages.  I’d like to see hot hot neon nail polish on her finger nails and give her a noogie to tousle up her hair a bit.

Blake Lively in Valentino

Perfectly dainty and commanding at the same time.

Michelle Williams in Erdem

One word: WINNING!

Chloe Sevigny

Chloe Sevigny

Before I say anything, I must say I will always be an admirer of Chloe Sevigny.  She takes the phrase “march to the beat of your own drum” to a whole new level and I love that in a woman and her personal style.  However, maybe this time I think she took the goth inspired look a tad too far?  Each piece has potential (maybe not the shoes, can’t decide) but all together it’s a bit witchy for my liking.  Though as always, I look forward to her next move.  Fashion Week is almost here, and I have no doubt Miss Sevigny will deliver!

Jennifer Lopez in Dolce & Gabbana

Jennifer Lopez in Dolce & Gabbana

More often than not I find J. Lo’s looks more cheesy than chic, but in this Dolce & Gabbana pink boxy coat, the woman has proved me wrong.  Her Kzeniya clutch is perfectly fitting with this bold coat so much that I am not even bothered by the red pumps.  She manages to make it all work!
