Clowning Around

It’s nice to see designers having a good time with fashion.  Often I find the industry can take the subject far too seriously, and in trying times, it’s relieving to bring a since of humor to the table.  And though there’s frequently the conception that clowns are scary, (which I do not disagree with one bit!) that added quality only makes it all the more intriguing.

From the heavily blue eye-shadowed sparkly lady at Louis Vuitton, to Stella McCartney’s bold and playful prints, to Marni’s crafty take, to Roksanda Ilincic’s Ronald McDonald inspired getup, designers are certainly upping the silliness factor, but in a way that works for the modern woman.  I’m hoping once Fall Fashion week comes, (just two weeks away!) we see lots more of this clownish trend!

Special Shout Out… Pedro Lourenco

“Classics with a surprise” is what Style.com’s Nicole Phelps had to say about newcomer Pedro Lourenco‘s Pre-fall 2012 collection.  Frankly, I beg to differ. I don’t believe that description does this collection justice.  See for yourself…

Pedro Lourenco Pre-Fall 2012

The first that comes to mind is London based designer Mary Katrantzou who in all her glory brought us a breathtaking Spring 2010 collection adorned with “photorealistism.” Her ability to be boldly innovative and ever so chic at the same time has been groundbreaking, thus paving the way for a major new (and very 21st century feeling) trend.   And if you ask me, Pedro Lourenco has done a damn good job following her lead. With the use of asymmetrical patterns and the mix of ombre embellished designs, he does a brilliant job at making this collection  his own.   I give props to Mr. Lourenco and look forward to what he will bring us next.

PRIMARY COLORS

London based designer Roksanda Ilincic has only been showing at fashion week since 2008, but she’s certainly made a place for herself on the fashion front.  What she showed us for Pre-fall 2012 was splendidly playful yet minimalist.  The uncomplicated silhouettes have been infused with a strong dose of primary colors, creating a perfect balance of confined fun.

The second to last look is a fabulous updated version of what we can maybe say will be a Roksanda Ilincic classic.

PRETTY PEPLUMS

Jason Wu Peplum Illustration

I had a feeling they were on their way back, and from the looks of Pre-Fall 2012, I can definitely say (with some enthusiasm!) that peplums are having a moment.

Leather AND Peplum? Yes Please!
The brave Peplum has been around since the Greeks starting dressing themselves instead of running around naked, but mid-century, we saw a sure rebirth of the flounced strip of fabric attached at the waistline which adds a little sass to any outfit.
Here’s a helpful timeline of the peplum’s evolution in the 20th century…

evolution of the Peplum in 20th Century

Thanks to Christian Dior and his support in “The New Deal,” the Peplum found a sure place in American Fashion in 1947.

Fashion forward ladies as well as some well styled celebrities have been spotted sporting a Peplum, everywhere from the streets to the red carpet.

Especially loving Liv Tyler in Stella Mccartney and Emma Stone in Giambattista Valli!

From Spring 2011, Jill Sander brought us…

And American Vogue featured a whole story dedicated entirely to peplum detailed ensembles.  Fabulous Fashion Editor Camilla Nickerson and Photographer Craig McDean brought the trend to life.

Then just for kicks, here are a few Peplum adorned ensembles from back in the day.

Wonder when us Americans began copying the always chic Parisians? Though are we to blame? The French have always seemed to be a step ahead or two.

The past few seasons, the use of leather seems to have made itself quite comfortable in RTW collections and this Pre-fall 2012 is no exception.

Special Shout Out To… MOSCHINO CHEAP AND CHIC!

Ok, so while going over the mini trends popping up for Pre-Fall 2012, one label’s collection proved to be so damn cute, I insist on giving it a special shout out! Moschino Cheap and Chic’s deserves a special round of applause based solely on its absolute preciousness.

I’m seriously dying over the robin’s egg blue leather gloves, not to mention the two tone pink and mustard bodice of that lovely dress. Never have I been so incline to have little animated duckies and forest creatures follow me as I parade around with some serious eyeliner action and ever so charming ensembles.

The label’s of course known for having a bit of since of humor, but they manage to keep it classy and sweet at the same time. The quaint cuteness of this collection has inspired me to dig up some of their greatest hits…

CALL TO ARMS!

The combo of midi skirts and gloves has made its way to the forefront for Pre-fall 2012. Weather pencil skirt, a simple shift dress, or a classic coat, the proportion has paired up with the timeless accessory that keeps your paws warm and the outcome is as prim and proper as ever.
